Ontario judge Warren Winkler is the recipient of this year's University of Toronto Bora Laskin Award for Outstanding Contributions to Labour Law. Justice Winkler enjoyed a distinguished career as a leading labour lawyer before his appointment to the bench in 1993, and since then has acted frequently in mediating high profile labour disputes. Most recently, he defied the predictions of most informed observers by resolving the deadlock between Air Canada and its unions, thereby paving the way for the company's restructuring and re-emergence from insolvency protection as a viable economic entity.
