About the CIR

Since 1965, the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources has brought together professors from many different disciplines and departments at the University of Toronto to teach and conduct research on all aspects of the workplace and employment relationships. The list of faculty teaching at the Centre reflects the depth and breadth of our university, and is why we say that the CIRHR can provide students with the best of both worlds: academic excellence in a small, collegial environment.

Graduate Degree Programs

The Master of Industrial Relations degree (as of September 2004 the Master of Industrial Relations and Human Resources (MIRHR) degree) was the first such degree in an English-language university in Canada. From our first graduating class of 2 students in 1977, we now graduate approximately 25 students annually. The 2006-07 program enrolment has grown to 60 students (full-time and part-time combined).

The PhD program was another first for an English-language university in Canada. Established in 1986, the PhD in Industrial Relations is a research-oriented degree that has prepared its graduates for academic careers in universities across Canada and the U.S. Small and select, an average of only 2 students is admitted annually.

Facilities

The collegiality and camaraderie of the Centre is enhanced by our physical environment: 121 St. George Street contains our administrative offices, faculty offices, an on-site Library, student computer facilities and a classroom.

As part of the St. George campus, the CIRHR is within five-minutes' walk to the University of Toronto Robarts Library and Information Commons, the Rotman School of Management, the Bora Laskin Law School, U of T's main Athletic Centre, Career Centre and Graduate Student Residence. Toronto 's subway is at our doorstep.
