Why did you choose to hire MIRHR students?

I am an alumnus of the program, and know the quality of learning offered by the MIRHR. We need talented and curious HR professionals and MIRHR students have not disappointed us.

What qualities/skills do you generally look for in summer students?

We look for individuals who are bright, curious, confident, willing to roll up their sleeves, who love learning, are honest, and are respectful of others.

What have MIRHR students accomplished during their work terms with Grant Thornton?

MIRHR students have developed an experienced hire recruitment guide, developed interview guides, and have been actively involved with campus recruitment from strategy to implementation.

What information would you give future students who may be interested in a work term at Grant Thornton?

We are a growing and evolving HR team adapting ourselves to meet the needs of our clients. Our structure is lean with more generalists than specialists. There is lots of variety in the work and lots of hands on involvement. The work isn't always focused on just one thing. You could be asked to do some research for a policy and/or be asked to get actively involved in solving a client problem.

Why did you choose to hire MIRHR students?

SEIU believes that students in the MIRHR program possess the necessary skills to work in a variety of positions in the labour movement. They are very well versed in their research skills and knowledge of labour relations. Over the years, SEIU has hired many graduates to work as union representatives and research associates. We currently have three graduates from the U of T program working in the research and collective bargaining departments.

What qualities/skills do you generally look for in summer students?

Students who have completed the labour law courses as well as economics, organizational behaviour, and research methods would be able to apply the skills they have acquired in these courses.

What have MIRHR students accomplished during their work terms with SEIU?

MIRHR summer students have been directly involved in contract negotiations and grievance arbitrations. They have attended membership meetings, and been active with our organizers and union representatives. We feel it is important to provide overall exposure to all aspects of working in the labour movement.

What kinds of opportunities are available at SEIU for individuals pursuing a career in the labour movement?

As a health care union representing over 40,000 members in Ontario and over 1.8 million members in Canada and the United States, our work not only involves collective bargaining support, presenting interest arbitration cases and advice to the members, but also a wide range of policy and legislative initiatives.
