Why Participate in a Summer Work Term?

The Summer Work Term Program assists students pursuing a Master of Industrial Relations and Human Resources to find summer work opportunities in human resources and/or labour relations. Securing a position through the summer work term program enables students to gain valuable and relevant work experience prior to graduation.

A Summer Work Term position can help you to:

  • Clarify your career interests and goals.
  • Acquire or upgrade the marketable skills that employers want.
  • Apply your knowledge and expertise to practical, real-world experiences.
  • Gain valuable experience to better market yourself for securing full-time employment following graduation.
  • Learn what employers are looking for from new professionals in Industrial Relations and Human Resources.
  • Remain up-to-date on the latest industry practices in your field.
  • Build a network of valuable business contacts.
  • Enhance the profile of the MIRHR Program among top employers.

Role of the University of Toronto Co-op Program
in Management at Scarborough

The summer work term program is offered by the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources in partnership with the Co-op Program in Management at the University of Toronto at Scarborough . The Scarborough co-op team works closely with MIRHR students to assist them in securing summer employment. From the initial meeting to get to know students and their career interests, to managing evaluations once students are employed, the co-op team is actively involved throughout the entire process. During the job search, students work closely with the co-op coordinator who provides support and assistance, while maintaining close contact with potential employers. The co-op coordinator provides students with job postings, oversees interview scheduling, and mediates job offers. Assistance with résumés and cover letters is also provided to ensure that students' chances of securing employment are maximized. Sharing their experience and expertise, the co-op team is a valuable resource for MIRHR students.

Types of Positions Posted

Although there are some companies that post work term opportunities for MIRHR students each summer, the majority of postings vary from year to year. The Scarborough co-op team works hard to find quality positions with top employers in the GTA and beyond.

Opportunities are generally available in a variety of areas of labour relations and human resources, both in the public and private sectors. The following are examples of past job postings:

  • HR Generalist
  • HR Project Coordinator
  • Compensation Analyst
  • Labour Relations Intern
  • Union Researcher
  • Employee Relations Assistant
