Internal Awards: University of Toronto and Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources

  • Internal awards require no special application, except for those marked OSOTF. Additional details and an application form are sent to all MIRHR and PhD students who receive an offer of admission from the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources.
  • OSOTF awards were created from endowments in excess of $1 million to support fellowships under the Ontario Student Opportunities Trust Fund program. The values of these awards are based on the annual incomes earned by the funds, and the amounts below may change at the time of payment.
CIRHR and UofT Fellowships
Value: $3,000 to $8,000 for MIRHRs, up to $23,000 for PhD's. Successful applicants are automatically considered for this fellowship if their grade average is A- or better.
 
Ontario Graduate Scholarships

Value: $3,333 or $5,000. The Government of the Province of Ontario provides 2,000 graduate scholarships tenable at Ontario universities. Each scholarship is valued at $15,000 for a three session academic year or $10,000 for two sessions. The Province of Ontario contributes two-thirds and the student's university provides one-third. The Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources has established the endowment funds listed below to contribute its one-third portion of the OGS awards won by its graduate students.   • FESA/FAIS Ontario Graduate Scholarship: Established by the executive board of the Federation of Engineering and Scientific Associations, a labour organization formed in 1972 by engineers and scientists interested in workplace issues.
  • Bob Mackenzie Ontario Graduate Scholarship: Established by the Lupina Foundation in honour of the former Minister of Labour, MPP for Hamilton East and union activist as a lasting tribute to his commitment to the rights of workers.
  • Lancaster House Ontario Graduate Scholarship: Established by Jeffrey Sack Q.C. for Lancaster House publishers of information on labour, employment and human rights law for over 30 years.
  • MIR 25th Anniversary Ontario Graduate Scholarship: Established in 2002 through generous donations from Master of Industrial Relations graduates to celebrate this important milestone and support future generations of students.
 
Avenor Graduate Award
OSOTF-Value: up to $3,000. Endowed by Avenor Inc., an international forest products company.
 
Donald K. Aynsley Fellowship
Value: $250 Established by the Ontario Labour Relations Board and contributed to by friends and colleagues as a tribute to Donald Aynsley's years of service as the former Registrar of the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
 
George Becigneul Memorial Award
Value: $500. In memory of George Becigneul who served as Director of Labour Relations for the General Contractors' Section of the Toronto Construction Association from 1964 to 1975.
 
Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce Scholarships in Youth Employment
OSOTF-Value: up to $20,000. Preference given to students who have an interest in the area of youth employment. Recipients will be given the opportunity to work with the CIBC Chair in Youth Employment or with other faculty working in this field.
 
John Crispo Graduate Award
OSOTF-Value: up to $3,000. Established by friends and colleagues in recognition of his role in founding the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources in 1965. He served as Director until 1975.
 
Lancaster House Graduate Award
OSOTF-Value: up to $3,000. Established by Jeffrey Sack of Lancaster House Publishing.
 
Noah Meltz Graduate Award
OSOTF-Value: up to $3,000. Created by friends and colleagues in recognition of his role as Director from 1975 to 1985.
 
Noah Meltz Memorial Scholarship
Value: approximately $3,000. Established at the University of Toronto Woodsworth College in honour of Noah Meltz, the former principal of the College and esteemed professor of Industrial Relations. It provides recognition to an outstanding student who has been admitted to the University of Toronto 's MIRHR program and who has completed a previous degree or certificate program at Woodsworth College.
 
Lorne T. Morgan Fellowship
Value: up to $1,000. In memory of Professor Lorne T. Morgan who taught in Political Economy at the University of Toronto from 1930 to 1962. Preference will be given to CIRHR students who have completed undergraduate studies in economics, economics and political science, or commerce and who have a strong interest in research.
 
John O'Grady Graduate Award
OSOTF - Value: up to $3,000. Established by the generous support of John O'Grady, a consultant specializing in labour market, human resources, and industrial relations issues.
 
L. Victor Pathe Graduate Award
OSOTF - Value: up to $3,000. Friends and colleagues of L. Victor Pathe have set up this endowment in recognition of his contributions to labour-management cooperation. Preference will be given to students with an interest in the area of innovative workplace practices.
 
Alexander C. Pathy Graduate Award
OSOTF - Value: up to $3,000. Created by the generous support of Alexander C. Pathy. He served the University of Toronto as Vice-President of Business Affairs, Vice-President of Human Resources, and as a Professor of Management and Industrial Relations.
 
Bob Rae Graduate Award
OSOTF - Value: up to $6,000. Established through the generous support of friends and colleagues of Bob Rae, former premier of Ontario (1990 to 1995), and noted author in labour and employment law.
 
Gerald Starr Memorial Award
OSOTF - Value: up to $500. In the memory of Gerald Starr who devoted his life to improving conditions for working people around the globe and is a tribute to his career with the International Labour Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. in Commerce and an M.A. and PhD in Economics.
 
Verma Graduate Award
OSOTF - Value: up to $3,000. Members of the Verma family: Mahendra, Yoga Shakti, Anil, Savita, Ranjan, Veena, Vikash, Eileen, Arvind and Ashok, have provided the generous support to endow this award.
 
Peter Warrian Graduate Award
OSOTF - Value: up to $3,000. Created by the generous support of Peter Warrian.
 
Lynn R. Williams Graduate Award
OSOTF - Value: up to $3,000. Established by the United Steelworkers of America to honour his contributions to the trade union movement in Canada and abroad. Lynn Williams served as Director for Ontario and Western Canada from 1973-77, as International Secretary-Treasurer from 1977-83, and as International President from 1983-94. Preference given to students with an interest in issues of workplace fairness and social justice.
 
Institute for Work and Health Scholarship
OSOTF - Value: up to $3,000. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated a past interest or expect to pursue work in the area of work and health.
