A message to friends and colleagues re Deb Campbell’s Retirement and Donations to the Noah Meltz Graduate Award
Deborah will be retiring September 30, 2016 after a distinguished career at the University of Toronto that began in 1973 in the Division of Social Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough. She has served the CIRHR for 40 years, most recently as Manager, Academic and Administrative Services, and has provided exemplary service and support to numerous faculty, four directors and generations of students.
In honour of Deb’s many contributions, the Centre for Industrial Relations & Human Resources is launching the Deb Campbell Appeal in support of the Noah Meltz Graduate Award. It is her wish that donations in her name be used to support this award. Noah Meltz served as Director of the CIRHR (1975-1985). Though HR at the time claimed that she was too inexperienced for the role, Noah saw something in Deb and hired her. Morley Gunderson’s excellent letter of reference was further evidence of her potential and the past 40 years have proved both former Directors right
Noah passed away in 2002 and here is an excerpt from Deborah’s eulogy that speaks to the impact he had on her career:
I will always be grateful to Noah for helping me to build a career at the UofT. He gave me opportunities, and challenges, that enabled me to develop skills I didn’t even realize I had. His support and guidance gave me the confidence to express ideas, the determination to seek out creative solutions, and the courage to learn from my mistakes. He was one of those rare individuals who always brought out the best in people. Perhaps that’s because he demanded nothing less from himself. He didn’t just write textbooks about human resources management, he lived by its finest principles each day. Noah was a role model for us all — his enthusiasm for his work, his remarkable achievements, his integrity and his grace.
