PhD Student Funding
U of T is the first Canadian University to offer a guaranteed level of financial support for graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees. Currently, the funding package provides a base of $16,500 plus tuition fees.
The Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources provides funding for four years from date of entry to the PhD program (five years for direct entry students), or until the student obtains full-time employment (or equivalent), whichever comes first. Support is from a variety of sources and may include the following:
- External awards from federal or other granting agencies
- Research assistantships (RA)
- Teaching and/or teaching assistant (TA) appointments (hours to be included in the funding guarantee are limited by the collective agreement)
- Other UofT and departmental funding

To be eligible for the funding package, all PhD students, including incoming students, must apply for all available TA positions for which they are qualified. PhD students who decline TA or RA positions that are included in their total financial support package will have their funding level reduced by the equivalent amount.
Additional details and application forms are sent to all PhD students who receive an offer of admission from the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources.
