PhD Student Funding

U of T is the first Canadian University to offer a guaranteed level of financial support for graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees. Currently, the funding package provides a base of $16,500 plus tuition fees.

The Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources provides funding for four years from date of entry to the PhD program (five years for direct entry students), or until the student obtains full-time employment (or equivalent), whichever comes first. Support is from a variety of sources and may include the following:

  • External awards from federal or other granting agencies
  • Research assistantships (RA)
  • Teaching and/or teaching assistant (TA) appointments (hours to be included in the funding guarantee are limited by the collective agreement)
  • Other UofT and departmental funding
