Biography

Mike Fitzgibbon has taught the employment law and labour law classes at the University of Toronto Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources since 1997. He also teaches Law of Labour Relations in the MIRHR program and has taught a number of topics courses.

Mike received a BA with a major in Industrial Relations from McGill University (1988) and a Bachelor of Laws (1991) from Queen’s University and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1993. Mike practiced exclusively in the area of labour, employment and human rights law throughout his nearly 30 year legal career. Mike worked for nearly 20 of those years on Bay Street at one of Canada’s largest law firms where he was an equity partner. He then co-founded a labour and employment law boutique before continuing his work as a sole practitioner. Since 2021 Mike has devoted his energies exclusively to academia.

Mike has written and been interviewed about most aspects of labour and employment law. He has co-authored two books on the Labour Relations Act and the Employment Standards Act, contributed chapters to a number of others and has presented at over 100 legal and HR conferences, including before the Law Society of Ontario, Le Barreau du Québec, the Ontario Bar Association, Canadian Bar Association and the Human Resources Professional Association of Ontario (HRPAO) among others.
