Biography

Alex Brat is a senior leader with over 25 years of progressive HR and LR experience in large, complex, multi stakeholder organizations within the higher education, professional services and manufacturing sectors. Specific areas of expertise include labour relations and collective bargaining, strategy development and alignment, change management, organizational effectiveness and team building.

Alex currently holds the position of Executive Director, Labour Relations at the University of Toronto, where he leads a team of LR professionals responsible for negotiating and administering collective agreements covering more than 20,000 unionized employees in 25 bargaining units represented by 10 unions.

Alex also teaches both HR and LR courses in the Master of Industrial Relations & Human Resources (MIR) degree program at the University of Toronto Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources (CIRHR). Courses taught include HR Strategy & Planning, Labour Arbitration, and Training & Development.

Prior to joining U of T in May 2010, Alex held senior leadership positions in HR and LR within management consulting, aerospace and automotive industries, including at Capgemini, Bombardier Aerospace and Ford of Canada. Alex has acted as chief spokesperson and strategist in numerous rounds of collective bargaining in both the private and broader public sectors.

Alex has a Master’s degree in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
