A significant portion (two-thirds) of the gender earnings gap in Canada remains unexplained when using conventional data sources and research designs (including controlling for occupation). Advancing our understanding of what drives the unexplained portion of the gender earnings gap requires researchers to look within occupations and organizations. We conduct a case study of the work practices and pay policies of a group of emergency department physicians in Canada, and explore whether or not there is a gender earnings gap that exists within this group. Our data spans the pre and post-COVID period, allowing us to further explore the impact of COVID on earnings for male and female doctors.
