Wednesday WIP with Guenther Lomas: "China's Belt & Road Initiative: Insights from Big Data"

Abstract: Over the last few years, China has been promoting its One Belt One Road campaign, which involves huge investment in infrastructure by the Chinese government in Europe, Asia and Africa. Using data crawled from over a million webpages, I present basic insights derived from news articles from various sources in different languages. The presentation will showcase an autonomous web crawler that learns on its own and is able to piece together tiny bits of information scattered across different documents. The end goal of this project is to identify the economic impact of One Belt One Road on China and the recipient countries, both quantitatively and qualitatively.
